George Clooney has been taken to hospital after being involved in a traffic accident while driving a scooter in Sardinia, where he is making a TV series.

The Hollywood actor and director was reported to be only lightly injured after colliding with a car near the town of Olbia, in the north of the island.

He was taken by ambulance to the John Paul II Hospital in Olbia with “trauma to his knee”, according to local reports.

He was later discharged but will need a course of physiotherapy to repair the damage.

His wife Amal, a high-profile human rights barrister based in London, rushed to the hospital after the accident, according to La Nuova Sardegna, a local newspaper.

Clooney had just left his hotel on the Costa Corallina – the Coral Coast – and was driving to the set of his new TV series, based on the classic Joseph Heller novel Catch-22, when he was reportedly hit by a car.

The driver of the Mercedes estate stopped and called for help.

Police are studying the accident site and trying to ascertain how it happened.

The actor was given a CAT scan which showed that none of his bones had been fractured, according to local media reports.

Clooney has been in Sardinia for several weeks for filming of a six-part series based on Heller’s 1961 novel about the USAAF during the Second World War.

Clooney has a role in the series, as does Hugh Laurie and Oscar-nominated Italian actor Giancarlo Giannini.

Filming has taken place on an airfield at Venafiorita, near Olbia, which was used by the German military during the Second World War.

The series is due to be shown on Channel 4 next year.

Set in Italy during the Second World War, Catch-22 centres on the tortured predicament of the main protagonist, Capt John Yossarian.

The “catch” in Catch-22 is a USAAF rule that asserts that a crew member is considered mad if he keeps on flying dangerous combat missions, but that if he applies to be relieved of such duties, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore must stick with the job.

In the novel, Capt Yossarian and his bomber crew are stationed on the island of Pianosa, off the coast of Tuscany.
