Many Porsche enthusiasts consider the 997-generation GT3 RS 4.0 the greatest 911 of all-time. A step up from the already magnificent 997 GT3 RS, it represented the pinnacle of Porsche performance from the 2000s into the 2010s, with amazing handling characteristics, a six-speed manual transmission, and a lovely 4.0-liter flat-six capable of revving to 8400 rpm.

Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

Only 600 examples of the GT3 RS 4.0 were built, 141 of which made it stateside. Buyers had the choice between a white or a black paint scheme, each featuring a 4.0-specific sliver decal set. Of those 600 cars, 39 are said to have been painted in a unique paint-to-sample color of the buyer’s choice, according to noted Porsche-obsessive ptsrs on Instagram. This car is one of those 39 examples.

Painted in an unspecified orange, this GT3 RS is offered for sale for a staggering $599,888 by Porsche Fresno in California. That may sound like way too much money, but here’s why I think it’s a good deal.

The prices of collector Porsches have gone nowhere but up these last few years. Carrera GTs have doubled in price, while air-cooled cars like the 2.7RS, 993 GT2, and RS America have climbed to stratospheric numbers. What’s to stop cars like the 4.0 from going up in the same way? Think about it. This RS 4.0 has all the makings of a collector car: It was built in limited numbers, has a racing pedigree, wears a rare factory paint color, has a manual transmission, and uses a naturally aspirated engine.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, and the market for 4.0s could tank tomorrow. But all the signs point to this car being a big-dollar item in the next decade.

What do you think? Should collectors consider dropping nearly $600,000 on a 997, or should they just put all their money into air-cooled cars like the 993? Let us know in the comments below.
