Oprah Winfrey’s love for bathing is world-renowned. There’s rarely an interview, blog post, or talk show appearance where her greatest hobby will escape mention. “I major in bathtubs. I spend my time looking for the best possible bathtub a woman can buy,” she told Vogue last August. “I love creating bathing experiences—bath gels, bubbles, crystals, salts, lavender milks,” she revealed to Harper’s Bazaar in 2012, adding, “I go prune. I go waaaay prune. I’ve gone to sleep.” On Monday, though, America’s most beloved talk show host revealed exactly how much of a bath connoisseur she really is.
Appearing on James Corden’s The Late Late Show with her A Wrinkle in Time costars Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, Oprah shared the best possible gift she could receive from someone else. “Bathing is my hobby, so any kind of bath salts, bath oil—anything for the bath, you can get me,” she said.
This revelation prompted Corden to imagine what the bathtub of Oprah Winfrey could possibly look like. “In my head, Oprah’s bath is like a Roman bath that only you go in yourself, and there are just general people around,” he said, to which Oprah revealed, “I do have a hand-carved tub….[carved] out of marble and onyx.”
She added, “You can get a couple in there,” when Corden asked her how many people would fit. “However, it was carved to the shape of my body.”
The proud owner of the most luxurious bathtub a woman could buy then gave audiences a glimpse into how one might acquire such a tub. “First, they do a model,” Oprah said. “They create a cast model, you lie in it. I told you—bathing, I’m serious about it.”
As for why she’s so serious about opulent bathtubs, the answer lies in a Vogue interview from 2017. “Honestly, it came from the fact that I was raised with my father in, like, an 1,100-square-foot house where we all shared the same tub,” she said. “And when I would go back home, after having been in hotels and seeing that there are nicer tubs in the world, and there’s that little tub with a ring around it, where Comet could no longer clean the ring around the tub—and it was my job to clean it—because it has been permatized, I vowed if I ever got my own place, I was going to get myself a good tub!”
